Challenge Contract Production grew out of a need of local businesses for additional labor. Challenge already had a history of training people with disabilities and other employment barriers for jobs in our community. We decided to hone our skills to the needs of business and Challenge Contract Production was born.

Currently in our 7,000 sq ft fully-licensed facility we package dry goods for a host of companies such as William Sonoma, Tropical Foods, Stonewall Kitchens, Redco Junket, Barefoot Contessa and many more. It is our commitment to 100% quality control and quality assurance that keep our food packing partners returning with further orders.

In our other production facility, we perform a myriad of assembly projects for local businesses like Cornell University, Ithaca College, Transact Technologies, Borg Warner Automotive, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Discovery Trail. Attention to detail and superb supervision keeps these large projects assembled correctly and delivered out the door on time.

And we discovered a monstrous need for confidential shredding. We currently serve over 50 local companies.

Faces of Challenge: Christopher Teitelbaum

Chris Teitelbaum is in charge of one of the busiest—but perhaps not one of the best known—ventures at Challenge Workforce Solutions: Commercial Cleaning.

One of the organization’s four Social Enterprise businesses (along with Digital Imaging, Contract Production, and Contract Staffing), Commercial Cleaning was established over 20 years ago as a means to create opportunities for individuals who have faced various barriers to employment by meeting the community’s need for a reliable, flexible contract cleaning service.

Today, Challenge Commercial Cleaning employs a fully-bonded crew of 25—nearly all of them full-time at competitive wages—and serves over 30 customers ranging from small offices to popular restaurants like AGAVA and Rulloff's to extensive facilities like GreenStar Natural Foods Market, Sciencenter, and Rev: Ithaca Startup Works.

Some of these community partnerships have synergies with other Challenge services; for instance, the recently-negotiated contract to clean the residence halls at Tompkins Cortland Community College will provide training opportunities for participants in our pre-vocational programs.

As General Manager, Chris is in charge of interfacing with clients, handling contracts, making hires, overseeing training, and scheduling the crews. He takes pride in creating opportunities for people with varied levels of past participation in the workforce to earn a steady paycheck. He says, “I enjoy providing a fairly-compensated workplace—decent jobs for decent rates. We’re now making a real effort to close in on the Tompkins County living wage for all our workers.”

Chris is an Ithaca native and a graduate of Ithaca College. Prior to coming to Challenge, he worked for over a decade in homeless and addiction services. Many of his Challenge colleagues don’t know that he is also an acting instructor with the The Actor's Workshop of Ithaca Theater Training Studio and has directed several of their productions.

Whether directing stage actors or cleaning crews, Chris is a natural leader and a dedicated citizen of his hometown.
